The World Meteorological Congress has approved the initiative for greenhouse gas monitoring and quantification. The WMO coordinated global greenhouse gas monitoring infrastructure will be known as the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW).

ICOS acts as a blueprint for the initiative: "The return of experience from existing monitoring entities to help WMO develop the integrated operational greenhouse gas monitoring infrastructure is invaluable," says Werner Kutsch, Director General of ICOS.
